Janet McCann,
Director of the Learning Center
Janet McCann holds an undergraduate degree in Political Science and a masters degree in History. She lives in Yakima with her two children, three dogs and five cats.

Sandy Nyberg,
Program Assistant
Sandy is our resident Viking who loves helping students and sharing stories about the “Land of the Midnight Sun”. She is our source for anything Scandinavian and her favorite thing to do is learning through traveling abroad. Sandy has been in education for 24 years, working with students in a variety of ways and is always happy to help you with any questions you might have about WSU or its programs.

J. Marie van Kommer,
Student Services
J. Marie van Kommer received her B.A. degree in History with a focus in Ancient Studies and Ancient Mediterranean Law Codes. Her specialty was Spartan Law. Her minor was a study in comparative international education. After living and working abroad, she has now returned to the area to begin the necessary prerequisites to enter the MBA programme through WSU Tri-Cities. She loves researching for the benefit of students, and appreciates a fine apple or nap.

Lee Rasmussen,
Office Assistant
Lee is a volunteer through the senior community service employment program. She lives in her parents’ home and is currently working on a book.
Lifelong auditor of classes. She is incredibly creative and caring.

Cortland van Kommer,
Official Learning Center Mascot
Cortland Nichole van Kommer is the official Cougar Cub mascot of the Yakima Learning Center. She was born on the 12th of March in 2006 to Gerrit and Wanda van Kommer. A future Coug, she is carried around by her “tante” to several of the Learning Center events. A bright young child – her linguistic ability has already included English, Dutch and French. She loves her “kitty”, singing, shoes, The Backyardigans and lutefisk.
