Spanish Immersion

Offered through the Yakima Academic Center , this program was designed to bring Spanish immersion, taught in the Spanish dialect of the valley, to Yakima. Classes are offered in the evening, two to three times a week for one academic quarter.

These courses were designed for any individual who may need to communicate in Spanish. During the course, high emphasis is placed on specialized vocabulary and conversational Spanish related to the vocational field of focus. The summer Spanish Immersion program is a general program applicable to all fields. The lessons, methods and activities are conducted in a low-stress environment, yet highly conducive to the learning process.

Offering 50 Teacher's Clock Hours and 5 Continuing Education Units, these natinonally recognized units of achievement can be used as evidence of professional development, as well as for career advancement.

A certificate of Completion will also be issues by the WSU Yakima office to all students passing the course.

Classes meet at the Deccio Higher Education Center on the YVCC Campus.

Student Objectives:

1. Carry on a basic conversation in Spanish.

2. Learn necessary vocabulary related to the student's vocational field.

3. Ask questions, give directions and express needs and wants in Spanish.

4. Gain a better understanding of the Hispanic cultures and how these affect the working environment.

5. Make short presentations in Spanish in a relaxed environment.

6. Read basic Spanish language texts as a means to improve pronounciation and linguistic ability.

7. Name everyday objects and increase Spanish vocabulary.

Program changes and cancellations - The University reserves the right to make changes in programs or speakers, and to cancel progras if enrollment criteria is not met. Liability is limited to the refund of the registration fee.

 

Cancellations/Substitutions - Cancellations made prior to one week before the start of class will receive full refund, less $100 processing fee. Cancellations made after the above dates will forfeit all fees paid. Student substitutions are acceptable.
