V&E Courses at WSU Tri-Cities

Some of the nation’s best vineyards are within a 60-mile radius of Washington State University Tri-Cites.
The Lower Columbia Basin’s long, hot, sunny days followed by crisp summer nights give our region’s wine grapes an advantage over those grown in California. And in the hands of the region’s talented winemakers, Washington grapes are turned into amazing wines that have caught the attention of critics, journalists, and consumers worldwide.

WSU has a long history of researching wine grapes and the best ways to grow them at the WSU Extension research center in Prosser, which is about a 20-minute drive from WSU Tri-Cities.

All of these factors make WSU Tri-Cities the ideal location for the Viticulture and Enology academic program.

Viticulture and Enology is an option offered within the Bachelor of Science in Horticulture, through the WSU College of Agriculture, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. The program is in cooperation with community colleges in the region that offer the necessary prerequisites for a four-year degree based on research and hands-on experience. A bachelor’s degree emphasizing Viticulture and Enology includes the science and technology of plant propagation, cultural practices, genetic improvement, harvesting, storage, processing, marketing, and other specific aspects of grape growing and winemaking.

Prospective students are encouraged to meet with the WSU Tri-Cities academic advisor before transferring from a community college, to make sure the program prerequisites have been met. Then individualized course plans are designed to ensure students meet their career goals and educational objectives in the many faceted wine industry.
