Program:

The Washington State University chemistry program offers advanced a specialized courses to aid the professional development for residents in this region, provides service courses in chemistry for other WSU Tri-Cities programs and offers courses leading to the Master's degree in Chemistry and, with prior approval, the Baccalaureate. Environmental Chemistry options are available at the BS and MS level. Courses are offered in all areas of chemistry. Close cooperation with the Hanford research complex provides an opportunity for thesis programs and for augmented course instruction. Hanford research facilities include gas, liquid, and ion chromatography, thermal analysis, proton and multinuclei nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometers, computer-controlled transform infrared spectrometers, Raman spectrometer, inductive-couple plasma spectrometers, and x-ray fluorescence and diffraction. Research Capabilities also include extremely sensitive and precise neutron activation analysis instrumentation, advanced high- and low-level radioisotope counting facilities, and specialized laboratories and facilities for the study and handling of radioactive materials.

Degree Requirements:

Students who apply for graduate study in chemistry will usually have satisfied the requirements for the baccalaureate degree in chemistry and are expected to have adequate undergraduate training in subjects recommended by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society. In addition to the courses in chemistry, the undergraduate curriculum should include courses in physics, mathematics (up through calculus), and at least one yearof study of a modern foreign language. Students with bachelor's degrees in physics, mathematics, or biology and who have had the basic courses in chemistry are also eligible for admissionto graduate study in chemistry. Students interested in the chemistry program should contact the program coordinator.

Courses:

Courses are listed in semester credits. Not all courses will be offered each year. For a complete list of courses offered by a department in any one term, consult the WSU Tri-Cities Course Schedule.
