What's Next?
After Meeting with an EA Advisor
Now that you've begun the research process, there are some other things you need to think about!
- Passport: If you currently do not hold a US passport, you must apply for one as soon as possible. Processing time typically takes 6-8 weeks. If you currently hold a passport, make sure it is current for six months after you return to the US from your study abroad trip. For information on obtaining a passport, go to www.usps.com/passport.
- Research: Find the best possible program that fits your needs in terms of location, course work and pricing. Use our handy Program Comparisons Chart and our list of Things to Consider to assist you in your research.
- Applications: Fill out the WSU Education Abroad application online at www.ip.wsu.edu/education_abroad as well as the application for the program you are interested in going on.
- Finances: Create a budget for your cost of attendance abroad, along with meals and travel expenses. If you plan on using Financial Aid, select "Yes" to Financial Aid in your WSU Education Abroad Application and visit www.finaid.wsu.edu/edabroad.htm as soon as possible to start that process. Research different scholarships through your program and also independently for studying abroad.
- Academic Advisor: Do not forget to meet with your academic advisor to discuss courses you will take abroad and how they will transfer back to WSU. Click here for the Course Approval Form.
- Student Visa: Some countries will require that you have a student visa before entering the country to study. To obtain a student visa, you must have a valid passport and acceptance letters from your program or host university. Some summer abroad programs do not require a visa; however, it is always wise to check with your program or host university.
- FERPA and Power of Attorney: Make sure all of your FERPA forms are filled out so your parent or guardian is able to sign for you in your absence. (Financial Aid, bank issues, etc.)
- Graduation Soon?: If you are graduating the semester you are studying abroad, be sure to talk with an advisor about what you need to do before you leave.
- Housing Arrangements: Think about your housing arrangements before and after you study abroad.
- Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation: There is a group pre-departure orientation at the end of the semester that you must attend. Ask an advisor for the place and time.
