Guidelines for Weekly
Commentaries
Your weekly critical commentaries should:
- Succinctly summarize one important theme/issue from that week's
primary reading;
What are the author's key points, the structure of his/her argument?
(Note: it is often useful to define key terms as part of this.)
- Critically engage with the author;
What is useful (or not) about the author’s perspective on that
theme/issue with regard to environmental sociology? What insights might
the text have (or not) relevant to your research interests? Make an
argument or counter-argument ...
- Be well written – use paragraphs, formal citations, proofread and
spell-check;
Citations for the primary text may be abbreviated (e.g. Dickens, p. 94).
- Be a maximum of 500 words in length; and
- Be circulated by electronic mail to all seminar participants no
later than 8:00 am Monday. Imbed one copy of your commentary in
the body of your e-mail; attach a second copy, as a
double-spaced document file.
Good luck!
