Debate #2, Instructions Part B
On Thursday,
April 24, we will debate the following proposition:
WHEREAS:
"This 'brave new world' is filled
with chaos, disorder, self-interested nations, weak institutions. Rogue states
and millenarian movements present both an immediate and future danger to all the
world."
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:
"What the world most needs now is the
establishment, through force if necessary, of a new moral order based on
democracy and the rule of law, even where such an order is not welcomed or
accepted in the short run."

Team 1 will argue in favor of the resolution. Team 2 will argue in
opposition to the resolution.
2. GENERAL RULES
- A. For the purposes
of this debate, we will "suspend disbelief" in the viewpoint we are
presenting.
- B. Both sides
will frame the debate drawing closely on Durkheim's analyses of mechanical &
organic solidarity, and anomie.
- C. Norms of
politeness and civility will apply.
3.
TEAMS & SPOKESPERSONS
- A. Each side
will be made up of three teams, one from each campus (Pullman,
Tri-Cities, Vancouver), consisting of all "1's" and "2's" on that campus,
respectively.
- B. Each team
will elect two spokespersons, one for the initial presentation, a second for
the rebuttal – for a total of six spokespersons for each side.
- C. Opening remarks
will be made by the three initial-presentation-spokespersons for each side;
closing remarks by the three rebuttal-spokespersons for each side.

Working session, for each team to prepare its opening remarks

Opening presentations – each side will have 10 minutes

Working session, for each team to prepare its rebuttal
