Sociology 410/510 - Spring 2003

Debate #2, Instructions Part A


On Thursday, April 24, we will debate the following proposition: 

WHEREAS: 

"This 'brave new world' is filled with chaos, disorder, self-interested nations, weak institutions.  Rogue states and millenarian movements present both an immediate and future danger to all the world."

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: 

"What the world most needs now is the establishment, through force if necessary, of a new moral order based on democracy and the rule of law, even where such an order is not welcomed or accepted in the short run." 

Procedures: 

1.  For purposes of the debate, we will "suspend disbelief" in the viewpoint presented.  Sides have been established as follows:

Ø     Pullman

        Team 1 - A through Ja
        Team 2 - Je through Z

Ø     Tri-Cities

        Team 1 - A through H
        Team 2 - I through Z

Ø     Vancouver

        Team 1 - A through G
        Team 2 - H through Z

     Team 1 will argue in favor of the resolution.  Team 2 will argue in opposition to the resolution. 

2.  Review The Division of Labor in Society, by Durkheim.
