Debate #1, Instructions Part B


On Thursday, March 6, we will debate the following proposition: 
RESOLVED: 

"The U.S. military should be constituted of soldiers obtained from universal military service (the draft) of all adults aged 18-26."

Procedures
 
1.  SIDES OF THE DEBATE
A.  On Tuesday, we randomly selected sides for this debate.  All students who counted off as a "1" will work together in presenting an argument in support of this resolution; students who counted off as "2" will work together in preparing an argument in opposition to this resolution.
 
B.  If you were not in class Tuesday, and your last name starts with an A-H, you will join the "1's"; if your last name starts with I-Z, you will join the "2's".
2.  GENERAL RULES
A.  For the purposes of this debate, we will "suspend disbelief" in the viewpoint we are presenting.
 
B. Both sides will frame the debate drawing closely on Weber's analyses of rationalization and bureaucracy.
 
C.  Norms of politeness and civility will apply.
3.  TEAMS & SPOKESPERSONS
A.  Each side will be made up of three teams, one from each campus (Pullman, Tri-Cities, Vancouver), consisting of all "1's" and "2's" on that campus, respectively. 
 
B.  Each team will elect two spokespersons, one for the initial presentation, a second for the rebuttal – for a total of six spokespersons for each side.
 
C.  Opening remarks will be made by the three initial-presentation-spokespersons for each side; closing remarks by the three rebuttal-spokespersons for each side
4.  TIMELINE
A.  (10 min.)  Introduction
 
B.  (15 min.)  Working session, for each team to prepare its opening remarks
 
C.  (20 min.)  Opening presentations – each side will have 10 minutes
 
D.  (10 min.)  Working session, for each team to prepare its rebuttal
