Sociology 320 - Spring 2007

Assignment #5

*** Due: 2:50 pm, Thurs., Apr. 19, 2007 ***

This is part of a five-week-long unit on quantitative research methods. We began this unit (Wk 10) by reviewing procedures in the computer lab, and learning more about SPSS. We then (Wk 11) focused on analysis of secondary datasets, and (Wks 12 and 13) on techniques of quantitative data analysis. In this unit and earlier in the course, we have worked with several quantitative datasets, including the 2004 General Social Survey (GSS) dataset (in both full and mini versions) on the CD accompanying the course textbook, datasets available via the ICPSR, and US Census data.

For this assignment:

(i)                  Choose a quantitative, sociologically relevant dataset from one of these or other sources;

(ii)                Formulate an hypothesis involving one independent (demographic or other) variable, and one dependent (behavioral, attitudinal, or other) variable available on that dataset.

Using SPSS:

(iii)               Generate histograms for both variables;

(iv)              Produce frequency distributions and descriptive statistics for these variables, including measures of central tendency and variation as appropriate; and

(v)                Test your hypothesis using SPSS' crosstabulation procedure.

Then:

(vi)              Supplement your preliminary, exploratory quantitative analysis with additional, relevant secondary materials, including published, peer-reviewed, scholarly journal articles – use WSU's electronics gateway to find relevant materials. Finally,

(vii)             Write up your research results a formal, exploratory, preliminary quantitative research paper.

As in your earlier, qualitative research paper, identify your research question and hypotheses, describe data sources and research methods, present and discuss your findings, end with suggestions for further research. Properly quote, cite, and reference all material. Include a complete list of references. In total, your paper should be about 3-5 pp. in length (plus cover sheet and references, typed, double-spaced, spell-checked, 12 pt. type).

Good luck!
