Assignment #1

Pick a social issue or problem of interest to you. Draw on your work in this class, other knowledge you have about the topic, and any additional information/ data you wish to bring to bear on the subject.

Part A. On a single page (i) formulate a formal research question related to that social issue or problem, using the causal or nomothetic approach; (ii) identify independent and dependent variables; (iii) operationalize your variables – how could they be measured? (iv) describe one or more sources for such data; (v) describe the unit of analysis and level of measurement for each variable.

Part B. Separately, write a 3-5 pp. analytical essay on cause and effect in the study of that social issue or problem, e.g.:

• "Cause and Effect in the Study of the Origins of Homelessness"
• "Cause and Effect in the Study of Earnings (In)equity Between Men and Women"
• "Cause and Effect in the Study of Sources of Neighborhood Crime"
• "Cause and Effect in the Study of Women's Choice of Undergraduate Majors"

Essay should be typed, double-spaced, spell-checked, 12 pt. type. All sources should be properly quoted, cited, and documented. Include complete list of references. Attach a cover sheet for the entire assignment, with the title of your essay, your name, and the submission date.
