 Founder, Latina/o Initiative for Development of Educational Renewal (LIDER)
  Yolanda Flores Niemann (Ph.D., University of Houston, 1992) is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Comparative Ethnic Studies. She is also an Affiliate Faculty in Women’s Studies and Graduate Faculty in American Studies. Her training was in General Psychology, with an emphasis in Social Psychology and minor in Management. Her current research interests include effects of stereotypes across various domains, the social ecological contexts of stereotyping, the psychological effects of tokenism, and overcoming obstacles to Latina/o higher education.
  Dr. Flores Niemann is also the co-principal investigator for the WSU Harvest of Hope GEAR UP grant, a 10 million dollar five-year project that focuses on preparing 6-12 grade rural students for entry into and success in higher education. The project, which includes seven rural school districts, is currently entering into its third year.
  Dr. Flores Niemann’s most recent books include Black/Brown Relations and Stereotypes, (with Tatcho Mindiola and Nestor Rodriguez, University of Texas Press, 2002) and Chicana Leadership (University of Nebraska Press, 2002). Other recent publications include “Stereotypes of Chicanas and Chicanos: Impact on Family Functioning, Individual Expectations, Goals, and Behavior” (2004, The Handbook of Chicana and Chicano Psychology and Mental Health) and “The Psychology of Tokenism: Psychosocial Reality of Faculty of Color” (2003, The Handbook of Racial and Ethnic Minority Psycholog). Some of her other publications may be found in The Journal of Applied Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Sociological Perspectives, Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, Journal for the Theory of Social Behavior, The Western Journal of Black Studies, and Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies.
  Dr. Flores Niemann has served on the Washington State Governor’s Commission on Hispanic Affairs, as Director and founder of LIDER (the WSU Latina/o Outreach initiative), on the LEAP (Latina/o Education Achievement Project) Advisory Board, and on service committees for the Division of the Study of Ethnic Minority Issues and Division for the Social Psychological Study of Social Issues of the American Psychological Association (APA).
