Latina/o Initiative for Development of Educational Renewal
L I D E R
Latina/o Iniciativa por Desarrollo de Educación Renovación
Strategic Plan*
Dr. Yolanda Flores Niemann
Founder, Latina/o Outreach
Washington State University Tri-Cities
April , 2003
Vision: WSU TC will be widely perceived as an active and friendly ally and member of the immediate and surrounding communities in Eastern and Central Washington. In addition, WSU Tri-Cities will be a source of knowledge on the Latina/o, immigrant, and immigrant in transition communities. The activities of LIDER will facilitate the transformation of the campus to reflect community demographics as well as furthering program development at WSU.
Mission: WSU TC will serve a master-planner role in the community by facilitating creation of a community culture in which people of all ages are psychologically and academically prepared to succeed in the university and to actively participate in civic and community life. WSU TC will serve as a bridge between the K-12 system, the community, and the university.
Core Value: LIDER is guided by a belief that every person should have a realistic opportunity to achieve a baccalaureate degree.
Strategic Goals:
- Widely disseminate information related to academically and psychologically preparing students of all ages and cultural groups to succeed in the university; Develop systems that address educational needs of traditionally underserved communities and will generalize to other groups and locales in the United States.
- Disseminate positive, education-oriented stereotypes of community Latinas/os, thereby redefining Latina/o identity, replacing existing stereotypes with a positive construction of Latina/o identity, reconstructing how Latinas/os view education, and reconstructing how non Latinas/os perceive educational expectancies of Latinas/os.
- Facilitate development of a welcoming and respectful climate of community cultural groups at WSU Tri-Cities
- Become center of knowledge about Latinas/os through research and academic discourse
- Facilitate development of leaders with knowledge of community cultural groups; Set up systems that will facilitate development and maintenance of community-generated organizations; Facilitate training of community service organizations to reach and meet the needs of culturally diverse community members
