Poetry > THE SILENCE OF TIME

THE SILENCE OF TIME

The river flows gently
The murmurs in it
Are low

I contemplate its
Age old silence

I gaze at its
Sun dried bed

This is a summer that
I buried a younger brother
This is a summer that my
Family inherited
His daughters

No longer will we run together
No longer will we camp out
And talk

Both of us chose different lives from here
Both of us chose lives filled with danger
I chose the boredom and din that goes with
battle
He chose crab fishing in the North Pacific
And working on oil wells on Alaska's North
Slope

Farewell brother - farewell for a life
Ended all too soon

I've told your friends Beth
And Steve of your passing

Your memorial was poignant
I wish I could have found more
Quotes from the bible that we
Shared

But time is eternal - I
Lit candles to your passing
I'll miss your phone calls
Goodbye
