Research in the Digital Technology

& Culture Program

- Jason Farman contributed a chapter to the recently published anthology TechKnowledgies: New Imaginaries in the Humanities, Arts, and TechnoSciences, published through Cambridge Scholars Press (2007).  His chapter, “The Virtual Artaud: Computer Virus as Performance Art,” studies the simultaneous emergence of the computer virus and HIV/AIDS in the United States (and how they are connected to the historic relationship between viruses, globalization, and the categories of self/other). You can read his chapter here.

- Doug Gast recently exhibited his piece called “Hot” in Seattle, WA.  The piece, which is 25 125W heat lamps that spell out the word “HOT” that are mounted on a pine board and plugged into 25 extension cords, comments on the connections between energy use and global warming.  His work can be viewed here.

- Jason Farman has had several book reviews come out this year including “Digital Performance” in Contemporary Theatre Review 17.1 (Nov. 2007), “Intermediality in Theatre and Performance” Theatre Journal 59.2 (May 2007), and “Upstaged: Making Theatre in the Media Age” TDR: The Drama Review 51.4 (Winter 2007).  These can be read on his website under the “Publications” link.

- The Digital Technology and Culture students in Dr. Farman’s “Digital Diversity” class have created websites that study diversity in social networking websites.  Their work studies issues of representation, nationality, gender, race, sexuality, and disability in various online social networks such as Second Life, networked gaming, Google Earth Community, and various forums and blogs.
