Lecture: Empathy & Democracy, 1:30 p.m., East Auditorium

Date:
Thu, 11/15/2012 - 1:30pm - 3:30pm

Adjunct Instructor Suzanne Webb presents a lecture "On Empathy, Civic Engagement, Fundamental Impulses & Democracy," from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in the East Auditorium. Free and open to the public.

Drawing from current headlines as well as "This is Water," a renowned piece of nonfiction by David Foster Wallace, and "Composition in a New Key" by Kathleen Blake Yancey, Dr. Suzanne Webb offers ways to help us all be more engaged, more empathetic, and more democratic citizens. She will tell three stories in which writing (on Facebook and Twitter) made a real difference. Then, she'll offer tools and resources for her audience to become "members of the writing public." Webb firmly believes that "writing does things" and that through our writing, we can all make change.

Sponsored by the College of Arts & Sciences.
