Lecture: "Dance of the Atoms: Modern Physics Meets Eastern Mysticism," 7 p.m., East Auditorium

Date:
Thu, 02/07/2013 - 7:00pm - 8:15pm

Lecture by Ratna Roy, a partnership of Humanities Washington with the College of Arts & Sciences 2012-2013 Series of Events. Admission is free and open to the public.

Two worldviews that seem quite different – Western science and Eastern mysticism – are beginning to converge as they both emphasize the unity and interrelation of all phenomena in a dynamic universe.

Both Eastern mystics and modern physicists have also realized the inadequacy of linear language to communicate multi-dimensional “reality.” Science has answered with mathematical abstractions; mysticism has answered with poetry: danced myths in Hinduism, riddles in Taoism and Haiku in Zen Buddhism.

Ratna Roy, a professor of expressive arts and consciousness studies at Evergreen State College, will lead a discussion about these parallels, asking us to examine how two seemingly opposed disciplines might have more in common than we think – and how they might lead to similar understandings.
