Congratulations to Xiao Zhang, assistant professor of chemical engineering and bioenergy in the Center for Bioproducts and Bioenergy. He has received the first National Science Foundation grant for WSU research to be conducted in the Bioproducts, Sciences, and Engineering Laboratory on our campus.

The $299,476 grant is under the NSF “ energy for sustainability” program within the Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems.

The research intends to provide fundamental knowledge about why some biomass — plant and other organic matter — is resistant to the enzymes that are used to break it down during the conversion process.

The grant includes working with the MESA program (Math Engineering Science Achievement) to teach high school students about clean technology and the biomass economy.

Dr. Zhang joined WSU in 2009. His research focus is biomass chemistry and the conversion of biomass to bioproducts and bioenergy.

Nehal Abu-Lail, assistant professor in chemical engineering at WSU Pullman, is the co-principal investigator. Dr. Abu-Lail specializes in nanoscale cellular interactions and mechanics.

Dr. Zhang previously was a senior scientist in the biotechnology group of the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada. He earned his Ph.D. in forest products biotechnology from the University of British Columbia and his M.Eng. in chemical engineering from Nanjing Forest University in China. He has been a member of the BioResources Journal international editorial board since 2006.
